Report: Lasses beaten by Lewes on the road

Sunderland Women make the long trip back home empty-handed after losing out against Lewes at the Dripping Pan.

Ellie Mason opened the scoring 65 minutes in, and Kirsty Barton sealed the Lasses’ fate in the 92nd minute.

With a squad ravaged by injuries and suspensions, many changes were made from the previous outing. Under-23 players Rhiannon Mallaburn and Milly Cairns were also brought into the squad.

It took just three minutes for Mel Reay’s side to have the first opportunity, with Emily Scarr’s corner finding Brianna Westrup, whose flick was eventually dealt with by the home side.

Near the half-hour mark, Katy Watson found herself through on goal and appeared to be brought down in the box by the Lewes defender, but the referee waved play on.

Watson threatened again, using her speed to beat her marker and go through on goal, this time forcing a good stop from Sophie Whitehouse.

The Rooks came out stronger in the second half and took the lead 62 minutes in, with Mason latching onto a free-kick to score the first of the game.

The hosts continued to threaten, with Mason having a chance to double her tally shortly after.

Lewes made it two in injury time from another set-piece with Barton bundling in the cross.

The Lasses have a big opportunity to bounce back with two home games in a row – Coventry United up next week and Sheffield United the following week.
