Lasses focus: Brianna Westrup previews Blackburn

Sunderland Women defender Brianna Westrup previewed the final game of the season on Sunday against Blackburn at Eppleton.

The Lasses have had a tough couple of results, but Westrup insists the team are desperate to turn it around and end the season on a high.

“The girls are itching to get back onto the pitch.

“The last two performances have fallen short of our standards so we obviously want to end the season on a high, but we also want to get back to the Sunderland style of football that we enjoy playing.

“You’re playing against tough opposition. When we’ve reflected upon the game, a lot of the things that happened were preventable or we weren’t putting ourselves in the best position to succeed.

“I think it’s about taking that and learning from it moving forward to help get the best possible outcome on Sunday.”

Both teams next to each other in the table, but Mel Reay’s side need to win to overtake Sunday’s visitors.

The Sunderland defender says the team are “looking forward” to the final game of the campaign.

“Both teams are fighting to finish above each other, so it’ll be a tight game for sure.

“We’ve won one and lost one against them this season so it’ll be the decider on who comes out on top, but we’re looking forward to it.”

Finally, Westrup gave her thoughts on a very positive week off the pitch, with the Club announcing a new hybrid playing model and a Professional Game Academy.

“Massively positive moves. There’s been so much talent that’s come through the RTC in recent years.

“In the past so many England internationals have come through the Sunderland system in this area.

“This just gives it that extra boost to bridge the gap between the RTC and the first team and keep really talented players on for a little bit longer.

“Hopefully this will only bolster the first team in the coming years.”
