Women Report: SAFC Women 0-1 Liverpool Women

SAFC Women 0-1 Liverpool Women

SAFC Women were defeated in their first Continental Tyres Cup match against Liverpool Women at Eppleton on Sunday afternoon by a strong Liverpool outfit.

A goal from Megan Campbell in the 23rd minute meant the away side went back to Merseyside with the victory.

Matt Beard’s side had the first chance of the game, with Katie Stengel striking the bar in the fifth minute.

The Lasses created a good opportunity 12 minutes in, with good play down the right side, and the ball eventually found Jessica Brown in the box, who controlled and struck a shot into the goalkeeper’s hands.

Liverpool took the lead from a free kick right on the edge of the box, with Campbell going round the wall and beating Allison Cowling.

Brianna Westrup denied the visitors a second minutes later with a brilliant block on the line.

The away side came close to doubling their lead 66 minutes in, with a long-ranged strike from Melissa Lawley taking a deflection onto the post, with Yana Daniels steering the rebound into the side netting.

The Lasses battled well for 90 minutes, but Liverpool controlled possession and saw the game out to win 1-0.

Sunderland now have two weeks to prepare for their next competitive game as they return to league action – an away trip to Crystal Palace.
