Lasses Focus: Westrup up for Lewes clash

Brianna Westrup previewed Sunday’s game against Lewes Women in the Barclays Women’s Championship – the last home league game of the calendar year.

The Sunderland defender discussed her time being at the club since arriving in the summer.

“I’ve been really enjoying getting to use the facilities, get some extra sessions in and the staff have been fantastic about making time so that I can individually work on what I need to work on,” Westrup said.

“The group is getting stronger week by week.

“Obviously it’s frustrating that we’re not getting the results that we want but I think it’s showing on the pitch that we’re right in the games, so we just hope to keep pushing on and for the result to fall to us.”

The Lasses centre half highlighted her partnership with Grace McCatty. The pair have played alongside each other in every game so far this season.

“It’s been good. I spend a bit of time with Grace [McCatty] because we car share so I think it’s good on the pitch when you know someone off the pitch.

“Grace has a wealth of experience playing in this league so it’s good to be partnered up with her and she’s a fantastic defender so it’s good to have her next to me.”

Finally, Westrup talked about the threat of the opponents, who have only lost one league game so far this campaign.

“We’re all positive. We’re going to go into the game looking to get as much of it as we can and push for those three points.

“That being said, Lewes have had a decent run and are in a good position so we can’t take them lightly by any means.

“They have some threats in their team, so we have to figure out how to neutralise those and put into a good game plan how we can exploit them.”

“I think the girls are really looking forward to it, especially being at home.”
