Ladies Signing: Lasses complete Gears capture

SAFC Ladies have made their first transfer coup of the summer, bringing in forward Nicki Gears from Durham Women.

Gears becomes the first signing of a new chapter for the Lasses, who will become SAFC Women from the 2022-23 campaign onwards, and makes the move up the A690 after seven seasons with Durham.

The 29-year-old brings experience to Mel Reay’s squad, and spoke following the switch from Maiden Castle: “I’m really excited for the new challenge. I’ve loved playing at Durham for the last seven years, but I’m delighted to get started here.

“The combination of Mel and Steph here is really exciting and we have a young, promising squad. I really enjoyed playing under Steph and working with her at Durham.

“Experience in this league is massive, and we have some unbelievable talent. To be able to bring some knowledge at this level can hopefully help take us to the next level and make us even better.”

Head Coach Reay added: “Nicki is a player who brings vital experience of the Championship to our squad. That’s something we see as really important.

“She’s had struggles in the past with injuries, but she’s back fit now, and it will be a great new challenge for her. She has real pace and an eye for goal.”

Gears will wear the number nine shirt for the Lasses. The deal is subject to all regulatory processes.
