Report:
Lasses win Wear-Tyne derby

Sunderland Women continued their positive start in pre-season with a Wear-Tyne derby victory over Newcastle Women at the Academy of Light.

First-half goals in the eighth and 36th minute from Tyler Dodds and Trialist respectively ensured a 2-0 lead going into the second half.

A deflected effort from Keira Ramshaw and a goal on her debut from Abby Holmes meant the Lasses made it two wins in two in pre-season.

Sunderland had the first chance of the game as Ramshaw’s header struck the bar, and Abbey Joice’s rebound went over the bar.

Moments later, Dodds opened the scoring with a tidy finish.

Later into the half, Trialist was subbed onto the pitch and had an instant impact, scoring the Lasses’ second of the game.

The Lasses dominated possession for large spells of the second half and got their rewards 67 minutes in as Ramshaw took a shot which took a huge deflection of the Newcastle defender and past the goalkeeper.

Another chance fell to Ramshaw 79 minutes in following a threaded pass from Holly Manders, but this time her shot fizzed just past the far post.

Mel Reay’s side kept pushing late into the game and grabbed a fourth in the 89th minute as the ball arrived at the feet of Holmes in the box who finished her chance to round of a solid performance.

With another pre-season victory and more important minutes in the legs, the Lasses now prepare for their third game against Hibernian Women on Sunday (KO 2:30pm).
