Ladies Report: SAFC Ladies 2-2 Sheffield United Women

SAFC Ladies 2-2 Sheffield United Women

Sunderland Ladies battled out a hard-fought draw against Sheffield United Women in the FA Women’s Championship at Eppleton, fighting to a 2-2 draw.

Abbey Joice opened the scoring 10 minutes in and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk equalised for the visitors mid-way through the first half.

Sunderland took the lead again through Holly Manders in the 66th minute, but Sweetman-Kirk scored again 10 minutes later.

An eventful start to the game saw a brilliant passing move down the right wing for Sunderland, and the ball eventually fell to Joice who calmly slotted her shot past the goalkeeper.

A minute later, Sheffield United were awarded a penalty after having the ball already in the net, and Sweetman-Kirk put her spot-kick wide.

The Blades equalised after Georgia Walters’ cross found Sweetman-Kirk in the box and she made no mistake this time after her penalty miss.

The Lasses almost took the lead again 59 minutes in after Emily Scarr’s header flicked onto the bar, and Manders’ rebound went over, and Sheffield United struck the bar minutes later.

Manders took her chance in the 65th minute as Scarr’s cross was met by a volley, forcing a good stop from the ‘keeper, and Manders smashed the rebound into the back of the net.

Sweetman-Kirk got her second of the game as both sides played out an intense draw.

Reay’s side now turn their attention to next week’s game, as they take on Liverpool on the road in the league at Tranmere's Prenton Park.
