Ladies Report: Lasses lose out to Liverpool

SAFC Ladies 1-3 Liverpool Women

Sunderland Ladies finished their November schedule on a disappointing note at Eppleton on Saturday night, as league leaders Liverpool took a 3-1 win from Wearside.

Emily Scarr gave the Lasses a first-half lead, but the advantage lasted just 18 minutes as Yana Daniels headed Liverpool level.

Leanne Kiernan finished well to make it 2-1 on the stroke of half-time, before a looping shot from Melissa Lawley secured the points for the Merseysiders.

Mel Reay was boosted by the news of Maria Farrugia's return from injury to the starting XI, as she led the line for the Lasses.

Allison Cowling retained her place in goal, and justified Reay's faith with a string of fine saves to keep Liverpool at bay - particularly during a five-minute spell following Scarr's goal when the visitors created a bombardment of chances.

Sunderland opened the scoring when the ball fell onto the left foot of Scarr from an initial delivery from the right-hand side 18 minutes in, the forward making no mistake with a tidy finish past Rachael Laws.

Liverpool - who struck the crossbar on three occasions in the first half alone - were far from quiet as they hunted down a leveller, eventually finding it through Daniels' close-range header.

And Kiernan turned the game on its head with a neat strike into the bottom corner right on the interval, a killer blow for Reay and the Lasses.

Sunderland, who had lost Faye Mullen and later Scarr to knocks in either half, looked to threaten throughout the second 45 but were thwarted by a combination of Liverpool's organisation and some potentially contentious decisions from the officials.

But it was to be Matt Beard's side who extended their advantage just after the hour mark, as Lawley's looping hit from distance dipped into the far corner.

The Lasses will now look to rest and recover over the international break, before hosting Aston Villa in Continental Cup action in a fortnight's time.
