Record breakers: Methven's Boxing Day challenge

With the festive season fast-approaching, tickets have gone on sale for Sunderland AFC’s big Boxing Day game at the Stadium of Light and Executive Director Charlie Methven is challenging fans to “put a marker down” by reaching a 40,000 attendance.

Jack Ross’ men will welcome Bradford City FC to Wearside on Wednesday 26 December, in a 3pm kick off.

As families and friends come together, and supporters from around the UK and further afield return home to the North East for the festive season, the club is asking fans to get behind the Lads as they target the top of the League One table.

Charlie Methven said: “Historically the Stadium of Light has enjoyed big crowds on Boxing Day as fans from further afield return home for Christmas.

“Our home attendance this season is currently averaging about 30,000. That is by far the highest in the league and would actually put us ahead of almost all the Championship clubs and about half of the Premier League. That is phenomenal and shows the fans’ real passion for this brilliant club.

“Stewart, Juan and I want us all to raise the roof on Boxing Day and make it a match to remember. The lads are pushing hard towards the top of the league but they need as much support as possible if we are all to achieve our objective of promotion. Be there on Boxing Day to show that we are all in this together and to put a marker down to the rest of the country that SAFC is back.”

All season, fans are being encouraged to share their support on social media by using #wearonourway when they have secured tickets or when travelling to the game.

Tickets for Sunderland AFC v Bradford City FC start from £10 for young supporters aged under 16, £15 for under 22s, £19.50 for over 65s and £22 - £27.50 for adult tickets.

The Lads will be back in action just 72 hours later at the Stadium of Light against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday 29 December (3pm). SAFC season card holders can purchase up to two tickets for £10 each to enjoy with friends and family.
