Match Report: Sunderland 0-1 Leicester City

Despite a dominant second-half display, Sunderland were left empty-handed from a 1-0 defeat to Leicester City.

The game’s first opening fell the way of the Foxes as Stephy Mavididi broke free down the left-hand side only to see his cutback thwarted by a vital touch from Luke O’Nien.

Anthony Patterson performed heroics moments later with a double save to deny Jamie Vardy and Yunus Akgun.

Patterson produced another outstanding save to deny Wout Faes’ header but the follow-up was nodded home by Vardy to hand the visitors the lead on 13 minutes.

The home side responded as O’Nien drove down the left following up with a dinked cross which was met by Jobe’s diving header. Mads Hermansen kept a tight grip on the effort.

Patterson continued to show his importance between the sticks preventing Hamza Choudury’s low bending shot from nestling into the bottom left corner before the break.

Into the second half and the Lads took the ascendancy. Two early substitutes from Mike Dodds meant the pendulum swung their way with Romaine Mundle and Adil Aouchiche charged with the task of bringing the Lads level.

Trai Hume’s rasping effort from distance had to be tipped onto the underside of the crossbar by Hermansen just after the hour mark.

Chris Rigg performed beyond his years and continued to up the intensity in the second period as a shot from distance was handled by Hermansen.

Hume was at it letting fly from the outside the box but this time stung the palms of Hermansen with his low shot.

Adil Aouchiche’s bending free-kick was pushed around the post and a penalty shout for a challenge on Dan Ballard went unheard as a dominant second-half performance was left unrewarded at the Stadium of Light.
