Preview: Lads make trip to the Hawthorns

Sunderland play their second game on the road this week as they face West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

Here is all you need to know ahead of the fixture…

Opposition

West Brom currently sit fifth in the Sky Bet Championship table, cementing their spot in the play-offs with 72 points, nine points ahead of Coventry in seventh.

Carlos Corberan’s side are on a strong vein of form, unbeaten in their last 10 games and accumulating 20 points during that time.

Brandon Thomas-Asante leads the Baggies in goals scored this season, netting 11 league goals in 36 games.

The West-Midlands side have only conceded 41 goals in the division, the third lowest tally behind Leicester and Leeds, and are second in the clean sheet charts with 16 shut-outs.

The reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light ended in a 2-1 victory for the Lads, with Dan Ballard and Dan Neil both on the scoresheet to keep the three points on Wearside, Mike Dodds’ second interim game in December.

Team news

Mike Dodds provided an update on the fitness of Dennis Cirkin: "He is back training with the group, but we don’t want to rush him back due to how long he has been out.

"The plan is to see him on the grass, but we will see how that materialises."

Nazariy Rusyn made a return to light training while Elliot Embleton remains sidelined. Defensive duo Jenson Seelt and Niall Huggins are currently undergoing rehabilitation from long-term injury.
