Match Report: Sunderland 0-0 Bristol City

Despite a strong display, Sunderland played out a goalless draw with Bristol City in the Sky Bet Championship.

Mike Dodds made three changes from Monday, with Jack Clarke returning to the side after a spell out through injury, along with Chris Rigg and Leo Hjelde.

Adil Aouchiche’s corner was eventually met by the head of Dan Ballard, but his effort was swept off the line by Max O’Leary.

A flurry of chances came Sunderland’s way on the 11th minute, with Chris Rigg, Aouchiche and Jobe all trying to find the back of the net, but none could test the Bristol City goalkeeper.

Mike Dodds’ side continued to threaten, with both Trai Hume and Pierre Ekwah delivering dangerous crosses into the box, but the visitors managed to deal with the threat.

The Lads broke again on the 24-minute mark, with Dan Neil connecting with Jobe – his pass released Clarke, but the resulting shot was saved.

O’Leary was called into action on the 34th minute, denying both Jobe and Clarke from close range to keep the game goalless.

Just two minutes later, the Black Cats had another huge opportunity, with Clarke’s initial shot forcing a save, and Aouchiche’s rebounded header crashing off the crossbar.

Bristol City did conjure up a big chance on 45 minutes, with Luke O’ Nien clearing Scott Twine’s effort off the line.

Liam Manning’s side came out strong in the second half – George Tanner forced a stop from Anthony Patterson 55 minutes in.

With just under 20 minutes to go, Trai Hume’s cross was flicked to the back post by Neil, and substitute Bradley Dack crashed his header off the bar.

The Lads return to action on Tuesday evening when they make the trip to Leeds United.
