Report: Defeat at the Stadium of Light

Sunderland AFC fell to a 0-4 defeat to Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship. Goals from Sam Greenwood, Matt Crooks, Isaiah Jones and Marcus Forss sealed the contest at the Stadium of Light.

 

The Black Cats should have taken the lead eight minutes in as Abdoullah Ba cut onto his right foot and fired an effort just past the post.

 

Just moments later, Seny Dieng was on hand to deny Roberts from close-range.

 

25 minutes in, Greenwood fired the ball across, and Coburn close-range effort was blocked by Ballard and pushed past the post.

 

Tony Mowbray was forced to make an early change with a third of the game played. Huggins being replaced by Seelt.

 

Moments before the break, Dan Neill was shown a second yellow and then red to reduce the Lads to ten men.  

 

Michael Carrick’s side had two big opportunities at the start of the second half with Crooks firstly denied by a superb Patterson save and McNair then heading over from the corner.

 

The deadlock was broken with thirty minutes to play as Fry’s cross into the area was finished first time by Greenwood.

 

Just moments later, Carrick’s side doubled their lead. Jones to the by-line and his ball across was tapped in by Crooks.

 

The game was sealed with 20 minutes to play or substitute Rogers played Jones in behind and he was able to take the ball round Patterson and strike for the third of the afternoon.

 

Into additional time, Latte Lath forced Patterson into a save and Forss was on hand to pick up the rebound to make it four.
