Three Lions x The Lads: Cirkin on England teammate Gelhardt

Dennis Cirkin has given his take on Sunderland’s signing of Joe Gelhardt, as the two England youth teammates reunite at club level.

Cirkin and Gelhardt, both 20, have risen through the Young Lions camps together and most recently shared the pitch for England’s U20 side.

“We played together in quite a lot of England camps at different age groups,” the defender said.

“He’s a very good all-round player, quick but can hold the ball up as well, and has an unbelievable strike on him with both feet.

“He brings a good atmosphere to the dressing room and he’s a positive personality to have around the place, a really good lad.”

With Gelhardt becoming our third January signing as he arrives on loan from Leeds United, Cirkin is confident the Lads can utilise an exciting pool of players to mount a push for success this year.

“We’re adding depth to the squad, which is always good. I think he can link up well with Rossco as well.

“The recruitment has been excellent with Pierre, Isaac and Joffy so far. We’re adding that crucial quality and versatility.

“We have an exciting young squad, and we’ll do our best to give the rest of the season a good go.”
