Match Report: Sunderland 2-1 Rotherham United

It was a special day for Jobe whose brace helped Sunderland seal their first victory of the Sky Bet Championship season.

His first goals in professional football allowed the Lads to secure a 2-1 win over Rotherham United.

After a cagey opening to the game, the deadlock was broken as Hakeem Odoffin found space in Sunderland’s box and drove home into the bottom left corner.

The Lads rallied and responded instantly. Two minutes after the opener, Jack Clarke’s looping delivery was headed back across goal by Dan Neil. Jobe was on hand to nod home from close range for his first goal in senior football.

The momentum swung in favour of Tony Mowbray’s side as they mounted pressure on the Millers. Bradley Dack couldn’t get his shot away from Clarke’s low cross while Patrick Roberts’ shot from the angle was blocked.

A breakaway from the Lads saw Clarke bend his shot just over the bar from the edge of the box but both sides went in level at the break.

They found the lead shortly after the interval when a well worked move as ended by Jobe’s finish from Dack’s lay-off just inside the box.

The Lads continued to up the ante with the teenager almost coming close to a hat-trick but he couldn’t divert his effort on goal from Roberts’ corner cross.

While Matty Taylor’s side were grafting to find a way back into the game, Tony Mowbray’s side continued to operate with comfort. Clarke found room in the box before his low drive was held by Viktor Johansson.

Luis Hemir was introduced from the bench and almost provided an instant impact as his touch and shot from the edge of the box whistled passed the post.

All-in-all, it was a strong afternoon's work for the Lads who claim their first points of the new season.
