Report: Coventry City 0-0 Sunderland AFC

Sunderland played out a goalless draw on the road against Coventry City in the Sky Bet Championship.

Both sides had dominant spells in the game and opportunities to break the deadlock, but neither goalkeeper could be beaten as the game finished at a stalemate.

Tony Mowbray made one change from last week’s win over Rotherham, with Abdoullah Ba coming into the side for Patrick Roberts.

A combative first half with few clear-cut chances, the first opportunity of the game fell to Bradley Dack, who controlled well to beat his man, but his shot was sliced wide.

The midfielder was involved again in the 17th minute, lofting a deft through pass to Jobe, who was stretching but just couldn’t get the connection required to test Ben Wilson.

Coventry’s first chance came from a deflected effort by Ben Sheaf, with the chance falling to Godden, but Anthony Patterson was positioned well to stop it.

A constant threat in the first half, Kasey Palmer was almost threaded through on goal, but the pass just strayed too far away. Minutes later, the midfielder found Ellis Simms with a through pass, but the former Sunderland man’s right-footed shot was saved by the feet of Patterson.

The Lads started strong in the second half, with the first chance after the interval coming from a short corner – after a string of short passes, the ball fell to Dan Neil who struck from range and forcing a save from Wilson, with Dennis Cirkin’s rebound also being parried away.

A minute later, an intricate one-two from Clarke and Dack led to the latter finding space in the box, but his shot was deflected just over the bar.

Patterson was called into action in the 79th minute, with Coventry finding space in the box on the left and getting a shot away, but the Sunderland goalkeeper made a strong stop.

With three minutes to go in regulation time, Clarke drove at his man and fizzed a low cross into the box, with Joel Latibeaudiere’s defensive touch forcing a save from Wilson.

With another point on the board, the Black Cats have a week to prepare before they’re back on home soil against Southampton next Saturday.
