Team news: Winchester ruled out

Carl Winchester will be unavailable for selection when Sunderland travel to Sheffield United due to a back injury.

The Northern Ireland international joins Niall Huggins and Dan Ballard in the treatment room, with the latter sustaining a fractured foot during Saturday’s draw against Queens Park Rangers.

Winchester is set to see a specialist on Wednesday to determine the extent of the injury, with his last appearance coming in the Lads’ Carabao Cup tie at Sheffield Wednesday last week.

Speaking ahead of the trip to Bramall Lane, Alex Neil provided the latest on Winchester’s fitness.

"Unfortunately for us, Winnie is injured,” said the Head Coach.

“He's out for a little while – I think he's due to see the specialist tomorrow, so we'll get a better idea of that one then.”

He continued: “That's why, at the moment, he isn't in contention for a role in the back line.

“It's a problem with his lower back and we'll find out the full extent once he's seen the specialist.”
