Team news: An injury update ahead of Gillingham

Jamie McAllister has provided a fitness update ahead of Saturday’s trip to Gillingham.

The Lads return to Sky Bet League One action against Steve Evans’ men following the international break, which saw two young sides defeat Lincoln City and Man Utd Under-21s in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Captain Corry Evans and Nathan Broadhead will miss the fixture, although both are making steady progress, while Niall Huggins has been ruled out for three months after suffering a stress fracture in his back.

But Luke O’Nien is available despite suffering a rib injury in last week’s win at the LNER Stadium.

Assistant Head Coach McAllister provided a further update on the returning internationals.

"All the international lads have returned now and trained this morning,” he said.

"We've had no injuries which is a positive.

"The only one where we maybe have a slight issue is Leon Dajaku, who we're just monitoring at the moment.

"It's just a slight thigh strain so we'll see how he is over the next 24 to 48 hours."

McAllister also provided news on Aiden McGeady and Lynden Gooch, who both missed the trip to Portsmouth a fortnight ago.

"Aiden trained this morning and he's coming along nicely.

“He's been doing a lot of work in the last 10 days, he still feels it a little bit now and then in certain movements, so we'll just monitor him over the next 48 hours and see how he is come the weekend.

"Lynden has been doing some running over the last couple of days so he's coming along nicely as well.

"Saturday will probably come a little too soon for him but he is ticking along, and we'll hopefully get him back training next week."
