Head Coach:
Johnson previews Wigan clash

Lee Johnson has backed his players to respond when Sunderland face Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening (KO 6pm).

The Lads’ 14-game unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday at the Stadium of Light, as Charlton Athletic returned to South East London with three points.

Johnson’s side will swiftly resume their Sky Bet League One campaign with a trip to the DW Stadium, facing a Wigan side that secured an impressive 4-1 win over Doncaster Rovers last time out.

Speaking to safc.com, the Head Coach backed his players to overcome their frustration and respond.

“When you look back at a game, it’s never as bad as you think or as good as you think, and I thought 80% of it was really good,” said Johnson.

“On this occasion, what we didn’t do was the world-class basics on three occasions – one where they had the chance and hit the post and then two occasions that cost us goals.”

He continued: “They are concentration errors and that’s what is frustrating, but we know that these boys are good, and they have been consistent over a period of time.

“If this happened regularly you would change your players, but in this situation it’s not and it’s a very good performance – better than the one at Bristol Rovers – marred by two concentration errors, so we have to cut out those out and add to our performance

“Wigan are in the fine form but we have players coming back from injuries, so we have a lot of options, a lot of variations in the way we can play and a strong bench.

“As a manager, that’s probably all you want, so I’m happy with where we are and I believe we can be consistent between now and the end of the season.”
