Peterborough United are Sunderland’s next visitors to the Stadium of Light in Saturday’s Sky Bet League One action – and Posh manager Darren Ferguson has given his thoughts ahead of the game.
Our weekend opponents have picked up three points from a possible six so far this season, looking to continue from their last-gasp victory over Fleetwood Town in their last outing.
“It’s a great fixture [against Sunderland], and certainly one to look at,” Ferguson told ThePoshTV.
“We’ve had some interesting meetings in the past, and there would usually be a fantastic atmosphere in a brilliant stadium.
“Obviously we’d prefer fans to be in the stadium, but it’s a fantastic ground and a game we’re all looking forward to here.”
The Scotsman praised the challenge of Phil Parkinson and his team, stating that he recognises the tough task at hand against the Black Cats.
“Sunderland are a good team – one you’d expect to be up there challenging, with a lot of different variations to their forward options, a lot of attacking players and plenty of knowhow.
“They have a lot of experience on the pitch, and as well with Phil [Parkinson] and Steve [Parkin], who have had a lot of success in the past.
“It’s going to be a tough game, and you know that will be the case whether you’re playing them at home or away.”
Ferguson’s side have travelled to Accrington Stanley this campaign, so the trip to Wearside represents another long journey.
“The travelling aspect has been difficult for us so far this season with the logistic challenges of team meetings, hotels and such during these times,” the visiting boss explained.
“Sunderland is another long journey for us, but we will be fully focused on the task and dealing with it.”
Finally, Ferguson gave a brief team news update from the Posh ahead of the contest.
“Ricky-Jade Jones recently took a knock in a friendly match and carried on playing, as young players do. We have to be mindful of those sorts of things – but he will be fit for Saturday.
“A lot of the others coming back got minutes under their belts and it was a good test for them, so the squad looks good for the weekend.”
