Festive rundown:
What we learned from the festive period...

Sunderland completed their festive fixtures on Saturday as they defeated Lincoln City 3-1 at the Stadium of Light.

That result was the culmination of four games in just nine days, and the Lads left that run of games undefeated and in a much healthier league position.

So, what can Sunderland fans learn from that run of results?

GOOCH ON FORM

Lynden Gooch has had a frustrating start to the 2019-20 season but the Christmas period has been superb for him and he has hit top form just when the team needed him.

His goal against former club Doncaster was a stunner, as he fired in an effort from range into the top corner.

He backed that goal up with two more on Saturday as he headed in to put Sunderland two ahead before he capitalised on a defensive mistake to finish coolly past Josh Vickers.

The American now has seven goals this season, and he will no doubt add to that tally over the coming months if he keeps his form up.

THREE AT THE BACK

Sunderland have had a rather mixed relationship with three centre backs over the years, and they have again turned to the formation in recent weeks.

This time though, Sunderland look far sturdier and more balanced with the change and the rewards are coming with better performances and more points.

Phil Parkinson looks like he has finally found the formation that he thinks is best for this team.

BACK IN THE HUNT

Phil Parkinson has saw his team climb back into the promotion hunt with an impressive Christmas period.

The team have risen to ninth in the table and are just one point off the play offs and six behind second-placed Rotherham, who we have a game in hand on.

A positive run of results in January could see the Lads jump right into the automatic promotion race and with momentum heading into the final third of the season.

SHOTS-GALORE

The festive period has given Sunderland’s attack a new lease of life, and they have been peppering the opposition goal over the last four games.

67 shots have been taken, and the Lads are clearly performing at the highest levels they have shown all season.

If they can continue to average more than 15 shots per game, then they will continue to pick up positive results.

NEXT UP, WYCOMBE...

Table-topping Wycombe Wanderers travel to the Stadium of Light on Saturday and both sides are enjoying differing fortunes on the pitch at the moment.

The Chairboys have three defeats in their last four games, while Sunderland are undefeated in their last five games.

A victory on Saturday for the Black Cats would put them just six-points behind the league leaders with a game in hand.

That means that there is plenty to play for on Saturday!
