The right track:
Parkinson confident intent will pay off

Phil Parkinson is confident Sunderland’s attacking intent will pay off if they continue to dominant games and play on the front foot.

Shrewsbury Town striker Jason Cummings scored from close range in the opening period of Saturday's game at New Meadow, turning home the hosts' only shot on target to ruthlessly punish Sunderland.

Chris Maguire and Max Power rattled the woodwork from distance as the Black Cats pepped Max O’Leary’s goal throughout.

But after scoring five in midweek against Tranmere Rovers, the Lads were unable to take one of their 16 attempts as the hosts held out for the three points.

“We have totally dominated the game and the one attempt from them has resulted in a goal,” Parkinson said.

“We have hit the bar and post three times; we have had balls flash across the six-yard box and had some great chances to not just draw the game but win it.

“In terms of the way we wanted to set out I couldn’t have asked for anymore but as everyone knows it’s all about sticking the ball in the back of the net.

“We have completely dominated the game – if we keep playing like that then we are going to win a hell of a lot of games at this level.”
