Manager's verdict:
'It's a point in difficult conditions' - Ross

Jack Ross admitted his side can be reasonably happy with a point in difficult weather conditions at Barnsley this evening.

Strong wind played havoc throughout as both sides traded blows, with neither team managing to land that knockout blow that would’ve handed them a crucial three points in the Sky Bet League One promotion race.

Sunderland’s best chances came in the second 45 when the wind was in their favour, Max Power stabbed wide after excellent work from Jack Baldwin before Lee Cattermole failed to hit the target from six yards as he connected with Lynden Gooch’s low cross.

In the end though, both sides were forced to settle for a point while Luton Town extended their lead at the top to nine points – over the Black Cats – following their win at Bradford City.

Speaking post-match, Ross shared his disappointment over the way the weather impacted on the quality of the match.

“When you play in weather conditions like we did tonight it’s always going to be difficult,” he said.

“Anything can happen in weather like that so to come out of it as we did and relatively unscathed, I think we can be reasonably satisfied.

“Sometimes when you aren’t on the pitch you can’t appreciate how difficult it is. Barnsley were really strong in the first half and made it difficult for us to get out of our own half.

“Both sets of players struggled in the conditions but had chances, it’s just a shame we were unable to take one of them.”
