Jack Ross believes there were plenty of pleasing signs to draw on following Sunderland’s pre-season defeat to Belenenses this evening.

The Black Cats produced an attacking display in the first 45, with Duncan Watmore, Elliot Embleton and Tom Flanagan all going close.

Embleton continued to ask questions after the restart, but just as he did the Portuguese outfit grew into the game and started to pose their own threat.

And it didn’t take them long to go in front, as Calila got the better of Denver Hume down the right and wheeled through on goal before firing past Jon McLaughlin.

From there, Jack Ross made nine changes as only Tom Flanagan and McLaughlin completed the full 90.

Max Power, though, made a surprise return in the closing stages as he played his first minutes of pre-season, while youngster Jack Diamond was also given a run out.
