Manager's view:
Ross demands ruthless edge

Jack Ross is determined to fine tune Sunderland’s mentality, so his players become ruthless winners as we approach the business end of the season.

Luton Town provide this Saturday’s opponents at the Stadium of Light, with just one point separating the two sides in the race for automatic promotion.

A win for Sunderland would see them leapfrog The Hatters, who are currently without a manager following the departure of Nathan Jones to Stoke City in midweek, giving them the perfect springboard to kick on for the remainder of the season.

However, speaking at the pre-match press conference on Thursday, Ross admitted his side must become more ruthless with their performances having failed to score more than once in their previous five league displays.

“Nowadays, there’s so much information available so statistically you can examine a lot of different aspects of the game,” he said.

“It depends on how in-depth you want to go with them, some are appropriate to where you are and sometimes not always.

“From losing positions this season, we have an unbelievably good record and from winning positions we haven’t lost this season in the league, but I think we’ve drawn four of those games when we’ve taken the lead.

“So, it’s a fair point to make and because of what we have as a squad and where we want to be, you want to make sure that when you get into a winning position, you stay in that position.

“Although we haven’t lost from that position, we’ve dropped points,” he continued.

“So, it’s like everything, there’s always little fine margins that you can improve upon and that’s one that we’re aware of.

“The players are aware of it and it’s something that hopefully we can put right in the remainder of the season.”
