Jack Ross shared his delight in his side’s second half display as they put four past Newcastle’s young guns to book their place in the last eight of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Two goals in three second half minutes – an own goal from Kelland Watts and a Charlie Wyke header – gave the Lads the advantage before Chris Maguire sent a rocket crashing into the top corner to make it 3-0.

Benji Kimpioka then added a fourth late on as he netted a brave header to round off the scoring and book Sunderland’s place in the last eight of the Checkatrade Trophy.
