Jack Ross: "It's a big boost"

Jack Ross has paid homage to Sunderland’s three goalscorers following their Carabao Cup win at Accrington Stanley on Tuesday evening.

Marc McNulty produced a Man of the Match display as he opened his account for the club inside the opening minutes.

The striker later turned provider for second-half substitute Charlie Wyke to bag his first of the season after Aiden McGeady had netted a sublime second to regain the advantage following Stanley’s penalty.

The result sees Sunderland safely through into the second round where Premier League side Burnley await later this month.

Speaking to safc.com, Ross shared his delight to see the three goalscorers get off the mark for the new campaign.

“It’s always important to see your strikers get off the mark,” he said.

“Charlie has obviously had the injury which had ruled him out, so it was nice to get him on the pitch and score. He had another opportunity to add to that as well, so it was good to see him out there.

“Marc’s overall play since he’s come to the club has been really good but naturally all strikers want to get off the mark for a new club as soon as they can.

“I’m sure that will set him off to score several for the club because his all-round place has been good.

“His awareness for Charlie’s goal was terrific, we know he’s got that in his locker and it’s just about making sure he gives us that week in week out.

“I’ve got to say though it’s certainly been a positive start to his Sunderland career.”

He continued: “Tuesday was a chance to get more minutes under Aiden’s belt without starting him because he is working his way back to full fitness and sharpness.

“That’s really important for him because his while his general fitness is part of it he needs to feel like he’s at his sharpest. He’s working towards that and his goal showed that – his awareness to intercept the pass and then after that is all about his quality.

“He has that in abundance, and he’s shown that consistently over the last nine or 10 months. I’m delighted for him but also pleased that he’s edging his way back to full fitness.”
