Manager's verdict:
Ross delighted with character

Jack Ross saluted the character of his players to come from behind and secure their first league win of the season against Portsmouth.

Sunderland trailed when Marcus Harness capitalised on a defence mix up but responded an immediately through Jordan Willis.

The centre-half rose well and met Grant Leadbitter’s corner with a glancing blow which guided it into the far corner.

Chris Maguire then provided the finishing touches to a free-flowing move as Aiden McGeady unselfishly squared the ball for the simplest of touches.

From there, Pompey and Sunderland cancelled each other out as Max Power missed the target with a vicious strike from distance before Gareth Evans saw his effort blocked by Alim Ozturk.
