Easter Monday sees Sunderland step up their bid for an immediate return to the English second tier, with play-off contenders Peterborough United ready to do battle for a crucial three points.
Kicking off at 3pm at the ABAX Stadium, Jack Ross’ side know the value that three points would bring after they brushed aside sixth place Doncaster Rovers on Good Friday.
Producing a performance and result that brought with it an air of relief to Wearside, Charlie Wyke was in fine fettle again as he bagged a goal and an assist in the 2-0 win over Grant McCann’ side.
Aiden McGeady played through the pain barrier too and was instrumental in carving Donny open throughout the match, while Ross’ decision to play Alim Ozturk and Jimmy Dunne for Tom Flanagan and Jack Baldwin was justified in the clean sheet.
With just two days to prepare for the Posh, changes could be in the offing as Ross looks to freshen things up to avoid fatigue.
After a challenging trio of home fixtures, which saw the Lads pick up just four points from a possible nine, Sunderland are back on the road in search of their fourth win in their last six away games.
Unbeaten on the road since December 2018, the Black Cats know they must maintain that run between now and the end of the season as three of their final four are away from the Stadium of Light.
Peterborough United made up ground on Donny as the race for a play-off spot continued, however, it was just a point as they were held to a draw at Fleetwood Town on Good Friday.
That came after three straight wins ignited their late charge following three defeats against relegated Bradford City, AFC Wimbledon and Coventry City.
Earlier in the season, both sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light. That night, Sunderland saw their lead twice whipped out after they were reduced to 10 men when Bryan Oviedo saw red.
Joe Ward initially cancelled out Josh Maja’s first-half opener before Jerome Sinclair looked to have handed the Lads all three points in the 79th minute.
However, former Newcastle striker, Ivan Toney, who is Peterborough United’s leading goalscorer this term with 16, levelled six minutes from time.
