Safe hands: Ross on McLaughlin signing

Sunderland are in safe hands following the arrival of Jon McLaughlin, according to Jack Ross.

On Monday, the club’s new manager secured his second and third signings as McLaughlin was quickly followed through the door by versatile midfielder Chris Maguire.

McLaughlin, who enjoyed an impressive campaign with Hearts during 2018-19, boasts a wealth of Football League experience while also winning promotion on three occasions.

And speaking to safc.com, Ross revelled in delight after beating a number of clubs to the goalkeeper’s signature.

“I think there was some issues in that position last year, and obviously Jason’s departure meant it became even more of a priority for us to get someone in,” explained the boss.

“Although he was in Scotland last season, Jon’s spent the rest of his career playing in England for successful teams in this league.”

He continued: “He’s got better with age, but he’s still only 30 which is young for a goalkeeper.

“I’ve always said the reality is we’re a League One club at the moment, so we have to make sure we’re aware of that when we’re trying to recruit players, but the thing we have on the flipside of that is the size and potential of the club.

“The fans have played a huge role in terms of the number that have signed up for season cards because it’s hard and fast evidence of that.

“I think it’s a testament to the club – and it’s pull – that we can still attract the calibre of player Jon is.”
