Manager's view: 'Remember why we play the game'

Jack Ross wants to bring a passion-driven environment to Sunderland that allows his players to thrive.

Speaking to safc.com, the new Sunderland manager outlined what kind of atmosphere he wants to create within the dressing room and on the training pitch.

Ross conceded he may have to convince some players that staying on Wearside is an attractive proposition, but admitted that’s simply part of being a manager and a challenge he’s faced before.

“It’s important for players to remember why we play the game, it’s a profession but that passion and enjoyment for it should always underpin it.

“The challenge, and what I back myself on, is to create an environment for them that they will not only enjoy but thrive under.”

He added: “It may be that I need to convince some of them that the challenge of us trying to drive the club back up is attractive, but that doesn’t scare me.

“I’ve had to do that before and if things were dead easy you wouldn’t have to convince people to follow you, but part of being a manager is to do that and it’s vital to what you want to do.”
