Solid foundations: Browning focused on the hard graft required

Tyias Browning believes Sunderland’s hard work on the training pitch is slowly paying off after Saturday’s important victory over Hull City.

Joel Asoro arrowed home the game’s only goal on 20 minutes, handing the Black Cats a morale boosting three points on the back of a frustrating defeat at Cardiff City the week before.

Lifting them to within a point of the safety line, Browning has admitted a record of five clean sheets in 11 matches isn’t surprising after plenty of hard graft at the Academy of Light.

And the defender, who is on loan from Premier League club Everton, believes it’s the ideal foundation to build on in the coming weeks with Birmingham City up next.

“It was well deserved. We are in the same kind of position as them, so it was a battle at the bottom. It was a good win,” he smiled.

“It was a good finish. All the young lads did well. Ethan (Robson), Joel (Asoro) and (Josh) Maja. I think we all worked well as a team.

“We have been working hard on it. It is no surprise it has been paying off and hopefully we can get another one next week.

“It is good to have him (John O’Shea) down my ear. It is probably the same for Jake (Clarke-Salter) because he has got a lot of experience so hopefully we can continue.

“We want the same kind of result next week now but hopefully with one or two more (goals).
