Fearless:
Coleman hails Asoro's attitude

Chris Coleman has lavished praise on Joel Asoro after the youngster played a starring role in Sunderland’s impressive comeback at Ashton Gate.

After a frustrating opening period which saw Bristol City claim a three-goal lead, the 18-year-old won the free-kick which led to the Lads’ second after a Josh Brownhill own goal provided a glimmer of hope.

11 minutes later, with just two minutes of added time remaining, Asoro picked up a similar position to devastating effect as he breezed past Joe Bryan before seeing his cross loop into the net off Marlon Pack.

And speaking earlier today, Coleman reserved special praise for the youngster who he says has worked ‘even harder’ since breaking into the starting XI.

“I thought Joel Asoro was absolutely excellent in the second 45 minutes,” said the Welshman.

“That [fearlessness] is what you need and he’s got a really good attitude – he doesn’t miss training and he’s ready for games whether we play him wide or down the middle.”

He continued: “I’m really pleased for him as well.

“When you address him in training, whether it’s tactical advice or you know, he always tries to take it board so I’m really pleased for him.

“He’s worked incredible hard and he’s worked harder since he’s got in the team to stay in the team, and that’s a pleasing sign.”

Coleman continued by commending Aiden McGeady after the Republic of Ireland international came off the bench and impressed, while also talking up Kazenga LuaLua and Ashley Fletcher.

“Aiden looked good on Saturday – he was bright and sharp – he made some good passes and scored a good goal.

“When he’s in that type form you can’t not pick him, so I was really pleased with him, as I was with Kaz who is getting fitter.”

He added: “And Fletch did everything right but when he got the rebound it was an incredible save which is unfortunate.”
