Manager's view: Ross on Watmore and Wyke factor

Jack Ross believes his recently fit again attacking duo will be a ‘big asset’ to the club over the coming weeks.

Duncan Watmore and Charlie Wyke clocked valuable minutes on Boxing Day as Sunderland collected three vital points over Bradford City in the race for promotion in Sky Bet League One.

Issuing the perfect response from Saturday’s defeat at Portsmouth, Wyke made his return from injury in the closing stages while Watmore topped up his minutes after just under an hour at Fratton Park.

But while the duo still have a plenty of work to do before they’re firing on all cylinders, Ross believes the quality both players possess will offer him something completely different in the next few weeks.

“Boxing Day was big in that respect because we got more minutes into Duncan (Watmore) and then you balance that with him starting down at Portsmouth last Saturday,” he said.

“It was great to see Charlie (Wyke) back on the pitch and I think in that brief spell on the park he showed the supporters he was in a far better condition than when we threw him back in before.

“I have said it having seen him in training that he looks a lot better. He has said himself that he feels a lot better too and he showed that on Boxing Day.

“These players will be a big asset to us in these coming games that we have.”
