Match preview: Gillingham v Sunderland

Sunderland are hitting the road this week and first up it’s a trip to Gillingham.

Taking place on Wednesday at 7.45pm, the Lads will travel to the Priestfield Stadium for the first time since 2004 as they look to maintain their unbeaten record in Sky Bet League One.

Jack Ross’ side picked up a dramatic win on the opening day before building on three points with a hard-fought draw at Luton Town, but last time out things really clicked into gear.

A sensational first-half display saw Scunthorpe United blown away at the Stadium of Light, as Max Power, Josh Maja and Chris Maguire found the net.

Gillingham, meanwhile, saw their unbeaten start to the League One season come to an end on Saturday.

After defeating Accrington Stanley and Burton Albion to begin with back-to-back victories, Steve Lovell’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat to unbeaten Walsall.

Like Maja, Tom Eaves has scored three goals in as many games, with the striker picking up where he left off after bagging 18 goals last season.

And after scoring three goals in six games so far this campaign, and pushing second-tier Millwall to penalties in the Carabao Cup, the Gills will pose a real threat.

Adam Matthews limped out of Sunday’s win, but the defender will travel south with the squad and he’ll be joined by Donald Love and Dylan McGeouch.

However, the trio’s involvement, particularly at Gillingham, remains to be seen.

Charlie Wyke is well ahead of schedule in his quest for fitness, but the striker will remain on Wearside this week, as will Tom Flanagan, Aiden McGeady and Duncan Watmore.

Gillingham could also be without several first-team regulars, with Lovell admitting he has to be careful not to push Billy Bingham and Callum Reilly too hard as the duo are recovering from injuries.

But the Gills boss is hoping to see forward Elliott List return to action.
