View from the opposition: Clough expecting Wearside battle

The stakes are simple for Sunderland and Burton Albion heading into Saturday’s showdown at the Stadium of Light, and Brewers boss Nigel Clough is expecting a real battle on Wearside.

Just one point separates the sides who sit 24th and 23rd in the Sky Bet Championship, with both knowing that failure to win could see their fate sealed come 5pm.

The Lads earned three points in the last meeting between the two sides back in November, as Chris Coleman picked up his first win in charge of the Lads.

And speaking ahead of the game, Clough revealed what kind of game he expects at the SoL.

"We're expecting a battle up there,” said the Burton boss.

“Chris won't want to go down without a fight – none of us do.”

He continued: "I think, having seen them at our place, we are surprised that they didn't get a bit closer to getting out because I thought they came and battled.

"They nicked a result late on – in the last five minutes they scored two goals like quite a few teams have.

“What they have done in recent weeks, and months, is fight and scrap for everything.

"They've had a lot of draws, and have probably been close to victories like ourselves.

"We're expecting a battle first and foremost up there."
