The Roadrunner:
Where would you play Duncan Watmore?

Where do you play a player like Duncan Watmore?

The return of the 23-year-old before the October international break has provided much optimism.

Watmore made his return at Preston North End, coming off the bench in replace of Lynden Gooch on 64 minutes to a loud roar from the strong following of Sunderland fans which echoed around Deepdale.

It was deafening and significant. A moment which signalled the hope a player like Watmore brings to Sunderland’s side.

The first few signs were encouraging. Watmore looked hungry and tenacious as he made inroads into Preston’s defence.

Skating in behind and down the sides, Watmore displayed his electrifying pace and carved out a handful of openings as the Black Cats chased down a winner.

Watmore then made his first start in 10 months last weekend at home to Queens Park Rangers, leading the line with James Vaughan in a two-man attack.

Both times the former Altrincham man has featured as a central striker, but that’s not the only position he can play.

Also known to feature out wide in previous season’s, Simon Grayson has a player on his hands who presents options – but where’s best to play Watmore?

“I think he can play anywhere really,” Grayson told safc.com

“He is a versatile player so he can play down the middle as a two, he can play as a one and he can play off the sides as well.

“He is quick, he carries the ball, he has got a fantastic work rate and work ethic, so it is nice to have him back and that is the biggest thing for us all.

“We still have to manage him because there are still days when he doesn’t train with the group.

“He is still on rehab from the injury he has had,” he continued.

“We have to make sure the load he goes through isn’t too much and we don’t get any repercussions of the injury.

“But it is nice to have him available and I think he is enjoying being back with the group.

“He enjoyed being involved on Saturday when he started the match for the first time in a long time and obviously he is only going to get better, fitter and stronger as the games go by.”
