View from the opposition: Conte targets PL history

Antonio Conte can’t wait to celebrate Chelsea’s latest Premier League title, but he’s refusing to toast their success until they overcome Sunderland and seal a record-breaking win.

No team has ever won 30 PL games in a single season but victory over the Black Cats on Sunday would see the champions surpass their own record and make history.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are on a mission to restore their pride ahead of life in the second tier, with a positive performance at the Emirates Stadium preceding their trip to Stamford Bridge.

But they won’t face an easy task with Conte reminding his players that their season is far from over.

“It is very important for us to be focussed and concentrated on our targets,” said the Italian.

“We reached a really important target by winning the league but now we have two targets; to try and win 30 games in this league – it would be unbelievable – and then to help Thibaut [Courtois] to win the golden glove.”

He continued: “We also want to prepare in the right way for the FA Cup final against Arsenal.

“It is important to celebrate because it’s been a great season for me, the players, for the club and for our fans, but before we can celebrate we have to try and win the game.

“I can’t wait to do this with my players and the fans, but also to celebrate with John [Terry] and Steve Holland, who is leaving after 18 years.”
