Outstanding: Moyes hails Honeyman progression

David Moyes has waxed lyrical over George Honeyman following the midfielder’s standout performance against Hull City on Saturday.

The 22-year-old played a key role in a 2-0 win over the Tigers with his corner leading to Billy Jones’ opener, but it simply served as the cherry atop an impressive outing from start to finish.

Born in Prudhoe, the academy graduate has been on the verge of first-team action for the duration of the campaign, and when called upon he’s stepped up to the plate.

And speaking to the local media, Moyes hailed Honeyman’s development while predicting a bright future in red and white.

“I thought George was outstanding,” said Sunderland.

“He played for us over the Christmas period – most notably against West Brom – and once again I thought he was outstanding then and in another couple of games.”

He continued: “I’ve got to say his level in training has lifted over the last two or three weeks, so he’s been on the verge.

“He came back [into the team] because he doesn’t ask or look across to the bench and we don’t have to ask him to run between players or close people down.

“He does it completely unconditionally and always give his best in every game, he demands the ball, does the work for the team and I’ve got to say his football has become better.

“He’s got a bit to do on his end product and should try to get us a goal or maybe make that killer pass, but we love his energy and he’ll do whatever I ask him to do.

“That’s really important with where we want to go.”
