On this day 19 years ago Sunderland suffered heartbreak at Wembley in one of the most historic play-off finals of all time.

Black Cats fan Clive Mendonca scored the first hat-trick in a play-off final to earn Charlton a draw, after Sunderland went behind three times.

Niall Quinn initially levelled the tie with a bullet header off Nicky Summerbee's corner before the Irishman almost turned the match on its head when he blazed over from 12 yards.

Sunderland did, however, go in front moments later when Kevin Phillips calmly flicked the ball over the on rushing Addick's stopper.

Mendonca then netted his second to draw Charlton level before Quinn restored the Lads' lead, bringing the ball down on his chest and then drilling across goal and home.

But the South London club took the match to extra time when Richard Rufus headed home five minutes from the end.

Drama continued to follow at Wembley, Summerbee lashed home Sunderland's fourth in the 99th minute and then Mendonca completed his hat-trick minutes after the restart.

And so it came down to penalties...
