Carabao Cup:
Vaughan targets Brunton Park response

James Vaughan believes tonight’s Carabao Cup tie at Carlisle United provides Sunderland with the perfect chance to make amends for Saturday’s defeat.

Leeds United produced a tough display at the weekend to inflict the Black Cats’ first defeat of the season on them, halting a four-game unbeaten run.

And speaking to safc.com, Vaughan highlighted the need for a response, insisting the quick turnaround for tonight's cup match offers up the ideal chance to restore some momentum.

“It was very disappointing because we have had some decent results in what has been a tough start for us,” he said.

“We were hoping to come back to our home fans and give them a good result and performance but unfortunately, we couldn’t do that.

“We can’t make excuses, we weren’t up to the standard we have set ourselves and we have just got to put that right in the next game.

“It is the ideal situation really because with the defeat, there is a quick turnaround and hopefully we can put it right,” he continued.

“Every game in this league is difficult, I have said it before. We are seeing that now and we are just looking to put things right (on Tuesday).”
