Sunderland's last visit to the Riverside ended in delight as Stephane Sessegnon scored an extra-time winner in front of a sold out away end.
With the Emirates FA Cup tie evenly balanced following a stalemate at the Stadium of Light, both teams headed down the A19 to replay the tie 10 days later.
Jack Colback broke the deadlock for the Lads in an action-packed opening period before Lukas Jutkiewicz levelled the tie shortly after the break.
But as the game went beyond 90 minutes, Benin international Sessegnon netted a sensation winner in the 113th minute to secure the Lads' pathway into the next round.
