The Vault:
Sunderland 4-4 Charlton Athletic

On this day in 1998 Sunderland suffered Wembley following an eight-goal thriller in the capital.

Sunderland took the lead on three occasions but Charlton Athletic's Sunderland-born striker Clive Mendonca stole the show with a hat-trick as it ended 4-4 after extra-time, with Niall Quinn scoring twice as Kevin Phillips and Nicky Summerbee also found the net.

But the Black Cats' fate was sealed from a dreaded penalty shootout as Michael Gray's effort was saved by Sasa Ilic and Charlton were promoted to the Premiership.
