Season review: Take a look at March

Sunderland 2-2 Crystal Palace

Fabio Borini scored a dramatic 90th-minute equaliser to claim a point after Connor Wickham looked to have put Crystal Palace on the path to victory.

Sunderland were ahead at half-time courtesy of Dame N’Doye’s deflected effort, and the Black Cats were good value for their lead.

However, two goals in seven minutes turned the game on its head as Sunderland lost their way in the second period.

Wickham came back to haunt his former employers on his return to the Stadium of Light and his strikes looked to have won it for the Eagles before Borini smashed home deep into stoppage time to earn the Lads a point.

Southampton 1-1 Sunderland

While Sunderland celebrated a last-gasp equaliser against Crystal Palace in their last match, they were on the receiving end of one when they visited the south coast.

Both sides traded blows in an enthralling encounter before Jermain Defoe flicked home Lamine Kone’s pass with minutes left on the clock.

But Virgil van Dijk caught Sunderland off guard in the 94th-minute and his strike denied the Black Cats all three points at Southampton.

Newcastle United 1-1 Sunderland

Sunderland were denied a seventh straight victory over their Tyne & Wear rivals Newcastle United when Aleksandar Mitrovic’s late strike earned the Magpies a share of the spoils.

As always it was a high-octane affair, Newcastle went into the match in a buoyant mood as it was Rafa Benitez’s first home game in charge.

However, Jermain Defoe dampened the host’s spirits when his volley handed the visitors a precious lead in the first period after Rob Elliot parried Fabio Borini’s fierce drive from range.

Sunderland were then unable to convert one of their many chances to double their advantage  and the Magpies punished them as Mitrovic climbed highest at the back post to earn Newcastle a point.
