Jermain Defoe penned a one-year contract extension earlier in the week to extend his stay on Wearside until 2019.

The 33-year-old moved to Wearside from Major League Soccer side Toronto in January 2015 and has since scored 19 league goals in 45 appearances.

Defoe’s goalscoring prowess is one of the best around and he is currently 11th in the all-time list of Premier League goalscorers, one behind Robin van Persie on 144.

Despite suffering defeat on his debut for Sunderland to former club Tottenham Hotspur, Defoe marked his home league debut with a goal which helped the Lads to a 2-0 win over Burnley.

Crucial strikes against Swansea City, Newcastle United and Everton followed as Sunderland pulled off a remarkable escape from relegation.

But Defoe’s first full season at the club was where he truly cemented his place as a true fan favourite.

The England striker netted five goals in his first four games of the new season, despite being played in an unfamiliar wide left position.

Sam Allardyce’s arrival in October saw Defoe revert to playing through the middle and it wasn’t long before Defoe proved why he is such a prolific striker in England’s top league.

Defoe’s goal 10 minutes from time earned the Lads a vital 1-0 win at Crystal Palace and it wasn’t long until he was the match winner again when his double on New Year’s day helped Sunderland defeat Aston Villa 3-1.

A hat-trick against Swansea City in his next match followed before an incisive equaliser at Liverpool rounded off a superb comeback after the Lads had trailed 2-0.

Crucial strikes at Southampton and Newcastle earned Allardyce’s side vital points and then a stabbed finish at Norwich City helped the Black Cats to a seismic 3-0 victory.

Defoe then netted a last-gasp equaliser at Stoke City before rounding off his scoring spree with a priceless winner against Chelsea as the Lads came from behind to seal a 3-2 victory.

Last season saw Defoe net 18 times in 34 games in all and at the age of 33, the forward reiterated just what a clinical finisher he is as Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy were the only Englishmen to score more goals in the Premier League.
