Interview:
Moyes targets progression

David Moyes was unable to downplay his excitement after taking charge of Sunderland ahead of the 2016-17 season.

The former Everton and Manchester United boss replaced Sam Allardyce at the helm just ten days ago, but launched himself into the deep end by taking charge of the club’s pre-season tour of France.

Unbeaten in pre-season, the Black Cats face Borussia Dortmund on Friday in their final game before the Premier League season begins, and for Moyes the objective is simple… Win.

“This is a big club and a big job for me,” said Moyes. “It is a big challenge but I’m more excited about this challenge because of the stadium, the facilities and the owner.

“I can see this giving me a chance to progress and make the team better, and hopefully – I’m going to say it again – do a bit of an Everton because in my last eight years we never finished outside the top eight."

He added: “Sunderland have got potential which many clubs don’t have, but we have to progress because we don’t want to be in the position we have been although we know that’s easier said than done.

"Winning, for me, is the biggest thing.

“I want to win."
