We were saddened to learn of the death of former Sunderland player Dick Huntley. A Hetton lad, he made a single first-team appearance away to Everton in November 1968, having the unenviable task of standing in for Charlie Hurley. Unfortunately for Richard three weeks later he sustained a serious groin injury and never felt he got back to his best. The previous season he had been a key member of Sunderland’s first FA Youth Cup winning side against Birmingham City, marking future England centre forward Bob Latchford out of both legs of the final.

Richard later played alongside George Best in two friendlies during his days with Dunstable Town, Huntley even scoring in one of those games against Manchester United. After becoming an accountant in London Richard moved to Ontario and went on to play for a couple of clubs in the Toronto area. He returned in 1980, managed Eppleton CW and then and took up a Sunderland season ticket which he maintained for many years.
