Following the success of the inaugural Hall of Fame dinner, the event is set to return in March – with another set of club legends set to be inducted for the class of 2020.
Sponsored by Stagecoach North East, the prestigious gala dinner will be held at the Stadium of Light on Friday 6 March from 6.30pm, as eight Wearside legends are honoured for their outstanding achievements.
The Black Cats’ record post-war goal-scorer and the only Englishman to win the European Golden shoe – Kevin Phillips was the first player to be revealed.
Fellow striker Gary Rowell also joins him in this year’s Hall of Fame in-take, he is SAFC’s second highest post-war goal-scorer and adored on Wearside for his legendary hat-trick at Newcastle United.
Everyone’s favourite captain, Kevin Ball is set to be inducted this year, he is honoured after skippering Sunderland to two promotions and he was part of the all-conquering 105 point winning side in 1999.
Joining Bally is Dave Watson, the man of the match in the 1973 FA Cup and prolific front-man Dave Halliday, holder of the club record goals per season, having smashed 43 in 1928-29.
Jill Scott, Sunderland born star of the women’s game who began her career with Sunderland and to date has played over 150 times has also been inducted, alongside the late Billy Hughes.
The goalkeeper on the famous Hemy painting in the Stadium of Light foyer, Ted Doig is named in the class of 2020, he is one of only two men to win four league titles with Sunderland, the third highest appearance maker in the club’s history.
The evening will be compered by BBC’s Jeff Brown and club legend Jimmy Montgomery will be handing out the awards.

Attendees will be welcomed with a drinks reception, before heading into the legendary Montgomery Suite to enjoy a sumptuous three-course meal, while also receiving a commemorative programme of the evening.
