DISCOUNTED ACTIVITIES AT BEACON: Indoor sports available for everyone

After the Beacon of Light successfully reopened its doors on Monday for kids’ holiday courses, it can now extend its offering, thanks to funding support from Get Out Get Active (GOGA).

In line with government guidelines the Beacon can now serve a programme of indoor activities with measures in place to ensure that everyone is in safe-hands.

In partnership with GOGA, an exciting programme of sports, that supports people of all abilities to enjoy being active together, will be offered at a reduced rate of just £2, starting from Monday 10 August.

Indoor activities:

  • Table tennis - £2 per table for 40 minutes
  • Badminton - £2 per court (singles or doubles) for 40 minutes
  • Fitness sessions - £2 for a family of four

    Outdoor activities:

  • 5-a-side (outdoor 3G) - £20 for 50 minutes
  • Casual kickabout (outdoor multi-use pitches) - £10 for 50 minutes

GOGA’s founding funder is Spirit of 2012 and the programme receives additional investment from Sport England and the London Marathon Charitable Trust. Its aim is to strengthen community spirit, increase confidence and improve mental health by increasing demand and accessibility of activities, helping to get some of the UK’s least active people moving more.

Jamie Wright, Foundation of Light Managing Director said “We are really looking forward to opening back-up again on Monday. Thanks to Get Out Get Active, we are able to offer a range of sports at low cost to the local community, helping them get active and healthy as well as have fun with friends and family.

“We have worked really hard over the last few months to ensure that the building is safe for the public and staff when we re-open next week. There are a number of measures in place including hand sanitisers on entry and throughout the building, as well as staggered slots for sports to ensure that households and social bubbles do not mix.

“We’ve also taken advice from sports governing bodies to ensure that individual sport regulations are adhered to.”

Since the beginning of July, the Foundation team has been running 1:1 football coaching on the Beacon’s outdoor 5-a-side pitches, to help prepare staff for re-opening. Over 100 sessions have taken place, receiving positive praise from children and parents alike.

Sacha Nicholson, whose daughter Autumn took part in the programme, said “Autumn enjoyed her coaching session. She really was anxious about attending, with not having done much football over the last four months.

“However, she came back absolutely buzzing about it – in fact she loved it so much she said she wished she could do it every single night. Her coach was Andy, who she hasn’t had before, but he made her feel so welcome and made the session loads of fun.

“So, a massive thank you to the Foundation team for getting some normality back into their lives, in a fun, safe but still worthwhile way.”

This week, the Foundation of Light’s popular holiday courses returned to the Beacon, with football and dance sessions available each day of summer holidays these can still be booked online.

The multi-use games area and five-a-side pitches is once again available for the public to book.
