Beacon of Light: Weight loss is the goal for men

An innovative football weight-loss programme exclusively for men who want shed unwanted pounds will launch at the Beacon of Light this month.

Founded in 2016, and endorsed by the FA, MAN v FAT Football is a national project which combines organised and competitive sport with an easy to follow diet and 24/7 online and offline support.

There are traditional weigh-ins before each game which are followed by a 30-minute match of five-a-side football.

Liz Barton-Jones, Head of Sport and Wellbeing for the Foundation of Light, explained more.

"MAN v FAT football is becoming very popular in the UK and I am pleased we are able to bring it within the Beacon of Light.

“Obesity is a problem in the area and by having a programme like this we will try to help every man get to their target weight."

Kicking off on 31 May and played over 14 weeks, players will be put into teams and will battle against each other in a local league every Wednesday evening at the Beacon of Light.

The Beacon is Sunderland’s newest sports, events, health and education venue and includes a 4G indoor rooftop football barn capable of hosting a seven-a-side and five-a-side games, a versatile indoor arena and six outdoor five-a-side 3G pitches, as well as classrooms, offices and informal learning spaces.

Each league is made up of 10 teams, with 30-minute games featuring eight players per side.

Depending on pounds lost by the players, bonus points will be awarded and added to the match score.
